A personal memory profile is a single, portable record of what you want AI to know about you: your preferences, projects, and working context. It lives outside any one AI tool, so ChatGPT, Claude, and Gemini can all work from the same memory. You can see every entry, edit it, delete it, and decide what gets shared.

What is a personal memory profile?

A personal memory profile is a record of the things you want AI to know about you, kept in one place, owned by you, and separate from any single AI tool. It holds the durable context behind your questions: how you like to be talked to, what you are working on, what you have already decided, and the background a good assistant would otherwise have to ask for.

Two properties make it what it is. First, it is written in plain language, so you can read every entry, correct it, or remove it. Second, it lives outside the walls of any one AI tool, so the same memory can serve ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini, and whatever you use next, instead of being rebuilt inside each one.

The category matters now because AI stopped being occasional. As of 2025, Pew Research Center reports that 34% of U.S. adults have used ChatGPT, and for many people AI is now part of a normal weekday. When a tool is part of every weekday, what it knows about you starts to matter as much as what it can do.

Why doesn't your AI already remember you?

Large language models are stateless by default. The model itself retains nothing between conversations; what it appears to know comes from its context window, the working memory that holds your current conversation and whatever else gets loaded into it. Close the chat, and that working memory resets. This is why memory for AI assistants is now an active area of research: surveys of the field describe memory as a separate layer that has to be managed outside the model, because the model's own context window is limited and temporary.

Bigger context windows do not fix this on their own. A window still empties between sessions, and even a very large one gets used unevenly, so simply stuffing everything you have ever written into every prompt is neither possible nor useful.

So the practical answer so far has been per-tool memory features: each AI tool remembers its own slice of you, inside its own walls. That helps within one tool and fails between them. Your context ends up scattered across note apps, meeting transcripts, documents, and several separate AI memories, none of which can see the others.

What should your AI actually remember about you?

Less than everything, and more than nothing. The memory that improves AI answers is small and deliberate: your preferences (for example, short answers with clear next steps), the projects you are in the middle of, the decisions you have already made, the people and terms that keep coming up in your work, and how you like your writing to sound. A few dozen plain-language entries carry most of the value.

What it should not be is a surveillance archive. A memory that silently captures everything you do, with no review, is a liability, not an assistant. The useful version is curated: suggested entries you keep or discard, each one short enough to check at a glance.

You rarely have to write any of this from scratch. The raw material already exists in the meeting transcripts, notes, and documents you capture every week. The job of a memory tool is to turn that material into editable entries you approve, not to make you type out your life story.

What shouldn't be the AI's decision?

Four decisions should stay with the person, not the software. What gets remembered: new entries are suggestions until you keep them. What gets shared: different tools can see different parts of you, and you set those boundaries. What gets deleted: removing an entry from your profile is your call, made in one place (tools that already received it follow their own retention, and an honest product says so plainly). And whether the memory moves with you: you can export the whole profile and take it elsewhere. No lock-in.

A fifth requirement makes the first four checkable: a record. Every time memory flows into an AI conversation, that share should be logged per event: which tool, which entries, when. A memory layer works quietly in the background, and quiet is fine. Secret is not. If you cannot check afterward what was shared, you are not in control of it, whatever the settings page says.

How is this different from ChatGPT, Claude, or Gemini's built-in memory?

Built-in memory is real, and it is improving. ChatGPT can save memories you ask it to keep and also reference your past chats. Claude keeps a memory summary across conversations that you can read and edit. Gemini can carry personal context from your past chats into new ones. Each of these genuinely helps inside the tool it belongs to.

The difference is the walls. Built-in memory belongs to the tool that made it: what ChatGPT knows about you does not help you in Claude, and what Claude knows does not follow you to Gemini. Each tool improving its own silo still leaves you re-explaining yourself at every boundary, and many people cross those boundaries regularly.

A personal memory profile is the external version of the same idea: one memory, kept by you, that every tool can draw from. That is not a criticism of the providers. The model can belong to the platform; the memory should belong to the person.

Who controls a personal memory profile?
